20th Annual Louise & Richard K. Guy Lecture Series: Joseph H. Silverman
Topic
How Quantum Computers Could Destroy The Internet And What Mathematicians Are Doing About It
Speakers
Details
Secure online communications and financial transactions depend on public key cryptography—but the methods we use today are susceptible to attack by quantum computers. When that will happen is uncertain, though estimates range from 5 to 25 years. This talk explores how new quantum-resistant encryption is being developed to replace older insecure systems. Professor Brown will revisit the early days of public key cryptography, discuss the challenges of creating and commercializing a new cryptosystem, and how collaboration is helping to build a more secure digital future.
