Leadership Transition at PIMS: Dr. Kristine Bauer to Conclude Term as Co-Director, Industry

The Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) would like to inform its community and partners that Dr. Kristine Bauer has decided not to seek renewal of her role as Co-Director, Industry, at the conclusion of her current term on June 30, 2025. Dr. Bauer has generously offered flexibility regarding the exact timing of her departure and will remain in her Co-Director role for a period beyond June 30 to support a smooth and effective transition in the months ahead.
Dr. Bauer has indicated that her decision is a personal one, motivated by a desire to explore new professional opportunities. She has also expressed her belief that this is an appropriate moment for PIMS to benefit from new perspectives and ideas.
Dr. Bauer served as the PIMS Site Director at the University of Calgary from 2019 to 2022 before being appointed Co-Director, Industry, in 2022. Over these years, she has made outstanding contributions to both the institute and the broader mathematical sciences community. Her leadership has been pivotal in:
- Establishing and strengthening partnerships with industry and non-academic research organizations
- Contributing to key strategic decisions that have shaped the direction and success of PIMS
- Developing and leading the Math to Power Industry (M2PI) workshop, which connects graduate students and postdoctoral researchers with industry collaborators
- Advancing collaborative initiatives that support the career development of Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP)
- Leading the PIMS Postdoctoral program during her tenure, including overseeing the PIMS Postdoctoral competition, the Emergent Research Seminar Series and initiating the PIMS Postdoctoral Summit
Dr. Bauer’s tireless efforts have greatly enhanced the institute’s capacity to engage with external partners and to prepare the next generation of researchers for diverse career pathways.
On behalf of the PIMS Board of Directors, we sincerely thank Dr. Bauer for her outstanding leadership, dedication, and collaborative spirit. Her contributions to the leadership team and to the broader PIMS community have been invaluable. Following her transition from the Co-Director role, Dr. Bauer will remain with us in an advisory capacity, including her efforts toward securing a new PIMS Alberta Grant, helping ensure stability and continued success during upcoming grant preparations.
PIMS leadership, staff, and community extend our deepest gratitude to Dr. Bauer for her exemplary service, her dedication to collaboration, and her lasting contributions to the mission and impact of PIMS. This is not a goodbye because Dr. Bauer will continue as a valued member of the PIMS Team.
In accordance with our governance procedures, PIMS is now initiating a search and inviting applications for the position of Co-Director, Careers, for a term of up to five years.
