The 2026 Elementary Mathematics Competition (ELMACON) took place on Saturday, May 2, 2026, welcoming more than 350 students in Grades 5, 6, and 7 to the University of British Columbia for one of Canada’s most challenging and prestigious mathematics competitions at the elementary level.

Organized by the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS), ELMACON brings together talented young problem-solvers from across the region to test their creativity, perseverance, and mathematical reasoning.

This year’s competition was especially memorable. The atmosphere throughout the day was filled with energy and enthusiasm. From the moment students began tackling challenging problems to the awards ceremony that followed, the excitement was unmistakable. Parents, teachers, and supporters cheered on participants, creating a joyful and encouraging environment that celebrated mathematical achievement. Two girls earned first and second place in the Grade 6 competition—an exciting milestone and a powerful reminder of the exceptional talent and growing diversity within the mathematical sciences community.

PIMS extends its sincere thanks to the many volunteers, parents, teachers, and organizers whose dedication makes ELMACON possible each year.

Congratulations to all participants for taking on this remarkable challenge. ELMACON continues to demonstrate that mathematics can be both rigorous and fun, inspiring the next generation of mathematical thinkers.
